Longevity – The quest for a longer and healthier life

INSIGHT. Ice baths, meditation, regular exercise, sleep optimisation and drugs such as metformin and ozempic—the list of so-called biohacking tips and methods for those who want to optimise their health and longevity is long. The interest in longevitythe science of extending lifespan and improving quality of life—is growing rapidly, attracting not only health enthusiasts and researchers but also large investors.

Tech entrepreneurs like Sam Altman, known for giving the world ChatGPT, recently invested $180 million in Retro Biosciences, a startup focused on extending healthy lifespan. Altos Labs, a company whose goal is to slow down and reverse the aging process of our cells, has also attracted major investors such as Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. The interest in longevity reflects a larger change in how we view health, aging and medicine. The question is no longer if, but when we will see breakthroughs that could revolutionise our understanding and navigation of aging.

The field of longevity has grown considerably over the past decade, with a significant increase in investments, companies and clinical trials focused on healthy aging and longevity. One example is the CRISPR technology that has been used in preclinical studies to correct genetic defects and treat symptoms of age-related diseases at the DNA level. Research has also identified several substances and drugs, such as rapamycin, metformin and resveratrol, that can mimic some of the effects of caloric restriction. Caloric restriction, meaning a reduced caloric intake without malnutrition, has been shown to extend the lifespan of various organisms.

However, longevity is not only about increasing human lifespan, the real challenge lies in simultaneously increasing the healthy lifespan. On an individual level, studies within longevity show that simple interventions such as micro-meditations, short training sessions and daily gratitude exercises play a major role in both extending lifespan and increasing the quality of life. As individuals, we therefore have a great opportunity to influence our own health positively, which contributes to more and more people becoming aware of longevity.

Longevity is not an isolated trend, but part of the larger life science landscape where innovation and traditional science come together to combat age-related diseases, improve human health and extend people’s healthy lifespan. At Sciety, we are very passionate about scientific breakthroughs actually benefiting society, instead of being limited to the lab. We work to ensure that research and new innovations are translated into products and services that contribute to the health and well-being of people all over the world. By providing capital and a network, Sciety helps leading life science innovations move from idea to impact.
